🇻🇳 Vietnam: what to see and what to know before visiting

My advice for a first trip is to choose one city or region as the main base before adding nearby places. This makes tickets and accommodation easier to judge and protects at least one unscheduled day.

Weather and suitable clothing

Hanoi, central Vietnam, and Ho Chi Minh City differ in weather and pace; the same week may be dry in the north and wet in the centre.

Where to discover local cooking

Cross streets steadily and predictably while watching the flow rather than making sudden movements; on day one, follow local pedestrians.

Transport and real travel times

A busy street venue with a short menu is a better place for pho, bun cha, or com tam than a restaurant offering a hundred dishes.

How to move around without wasting time

A night train saves a hotel but not always sleep; on a long trip, one daytime flight may preserve the entire following day.

Local etiquette and respectful behaviour

For Ha Long Bay or the Mekong Delta, compare group size, actual time on the water, and environmental practice rather than only cabin photographs.

Where to begin

A scooter requires experience, licence, helmet, and suitable insurance; riding as a passenger through an app is often safer than learning in dense traffic.
